On Thursday, August 25th, the Louisville Health Advisory Board (LHAB) hosted a mayoral candidate forum featuring Bill Dieruf and Craig Greenberg. The event was livestreamed via the Zoom webinar platform from the Leadership Louisville Center at 707 W. Main St. in Downtown Louisville with limited in-person attendance. This nonpartisan event was sponsored by the LHAB and its member organizations. Follow this link to view a recording of the forum.
The primary focus of the forum was grounded in exploring each of the candidates’ perspectives and proposed policies or plans connected to public health. Mayors are key public health leaders and play an important role in shaping social determinants of health. The desired outcome of this event was to begin discussing important topic areas connected to health equity and removing barriers to health with our city’s future leader.
A survey collecting questions for the candidates was sent to representatives of LHAB member organizations and engaged community members. Respondents were asked to pose questions related to the following topics:
Environment (where you live, learn, and work)
Housing
Experiencing racism, discrimination, and/or violence
Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders
Maternal & infant health
Access to nutritious foods and physical activity opportunities.
Submitted questions were then used to create a representative question for each topic posed to the candidates by Dior Cotten, Population Health Strategy Lead, Humana using a traditional “Question and Answer” format. Each of the candidates were given equal time to present their answers and/or views in response to the six health policy questions, as well as for opening and closing statements.
To ensure the community could respond to the candidates’ responses and statements, the survey remained open until September 2nd and all submitted questions and comments have been shared with the candidates.
The Louisville Health Advisory Board and McNary Group would like to thank the candidates, their campaign teams, Leadership Louisville and their team esp. Julie Dunn-Crawford for her support on the day of the event, and our LHAB co-chairs at the board and committee level for their thoughtful guidance and input, as well as our corporate and community partners who attended the event in-person and virtually.
